Time for an update on the Arizona Fall League Peoria Javelinas (those are javelinas pictured), and a couple of other random winter items.
I assume that the scores don't matter.
October 8 -- Box
It happens that I'd already designated Kyle Hunter as a "plateau leap" when he was given the chance to replace Danny Hultzen in the AFL, but I hadn't written up the post yet (which is here). But he made me look good in his first outing: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K.
Stefen Romero played LF and went 1-for-3 and Patrick Kivlehan was the DH and went 1-for-4.
October 9 -- Box
Chris Taylor was the only Mariners prospect in the game. He played second base and went 0-for-3 with a walk.
October 10 -- Box
Dynamic Duo!
Spectometer favorites Carson Smith and Dominic Leone closed it out for Peoria.
Smith pitched a perfect 8th and Leone navigated the 9th yielding one hit, but registering two strikeouts, and earning the save.
Romero went 0-for-3 with a walk in LF, and Kivlehan was 0-for-4 at third base.
October 11 -- Box
Brandon Maurer got the start, but only went 1.2 IP after giving up 2 ER on three hits and two walks.
Taylor went 2-for-5 playing shortstop.
Romero was 1-for-4 in LF.
Hitting Skills Contest
This is different, and I don't know what to do other than just quote the article from mlb.com:
Following four untimed bunts at designated objectives, every hitter received two minutes to bat against live pitching with the goal of striking as many targets dispersed around the infield, outfield and home run grass as possible. Point values varied from 100 for hitting oversized baseball cards, giant inflatable boxing rings and towers of ball buckets to 600 for depositing a ball into an enclosed trampoline in deep right-center field. Homers ranged in worth from 100-500 depending on where they were hit.
At the end of the two-minute period, each contestant got one final swing off a tee, and any target hit with the "Bowman Bonus Ball" resulted in double points. Any foul ball hit at any point during the derby resulted in a 50 point deduction from the player's tally.
Anyway, Romero finished second in the AL competition, behind Yankee farmhand Peter O'Brien.
Other Leagues
Various guys from the Mariner organization will pop up in the winter leagues, but the most interesting one so far is AAA closer Logan Bawcom, who is pitching for Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League. So far, Bawcom has pitched 2.0 IP in two outings, and has one strikeout and gave up one earned run.
